Club Penguin Review

Club Penguin, developed by Disney, is one of the virtual online worlds for kids which requires membership in order to access all of its features and gain its full benefits.  Membership is offered at monthly, semi-annually, and annual rates.

The cute cartoon images may be a good starting point that draw boys and girls into Club Penguin, although they may be a bit dated by today’s standard, especially comparing to new virtual worlds like The Travels of Wiglington and Wenks.

While navigating the site is easy through the penguin icons, there are links which also encourage youngsters to purchase toys, apparel, and other products.  Although the graphics will appeal to very young children, encouraging them to make purchases is the main focus of this virtual online world for kids.  Parents should be aware of this if they are thinking about allowing their young children to become members of Club Penguin.

clubpenguinOther than enjoying the colorful graphics and having the opportunity to submit artwork and other similar creations, Club Penguin does not have much to offer to youngsters.  There is not much to do on the virtual online world for kids site itself.  Each day, a new activity is presented.  The activities consist primarily of informing kids about new ways to play and explore on the Club Penguin island, while also informing them of numerous things which they can buy.  In popular kids’ terminology, this site is little more than a rip-off.  The opportunity to read online comics is essentially all that Club Penguin offers without cost.

While many parents are realistically wary of virtual online worlds for kids which make it necessary to have paid membership in order to fully enjoy the site, as well as kids’ sites which place a considerable amount of emphasis on selling merchandise, Club Penguin is very focused on both of these issues.  If you are thinking about Club Penguin for your child, it would be a good idea to consider the ongoing costs of using the site and the merchandise which is being promoted.

If the costs associated with Club Penguin are not enough to convince you that it isn’t really worth it, the small amount of activity offered on the site itself probably will be.  Club Penguin appears to be an opportunity to spend money, while doing very little else.
